Creating Characters with Shapes

Writer's picture: Amy JohnsonAmy Johnson

I've been studying different characters to see how the can be created using basic shapes, this example below is from Smiling Friends (Adult Swim).

I tried to "reverse engineer" the image I sourced to work out how the shapes turned into line work and finally full colour characters.

Whereas I had mostly been experimenting with basic circles, triangles and squares/oblongs in my own work. This exercise helped me to think about using more ovals and tweaked vector shapes/curves to enhance my designs. I would like to be able to design my own characters in future using similar principles.
